Do you have a summer reading list? What kinds of books do you choose? While on vacation this week, I brought a copy of Brendon Burchard’s new best-selling book, The Charge. (www.thechargebook.com)
Usually, I would choose a mystery or thriller for my summer read. However, The Charge promises motivations to live a more strategic and purposeful life – two things I’ve been sorely lacking. In fact, since Christmas time, I’ve struggled with trying to balance my family, my desire to get out and exercise more and keeping up with this website. Life should be more than just having enough energy to make it through each day, wouldn’t you agree?
Buchard asserts there are 10 activators to living a fully charged life. I’m choosing to focus on the first one he mentions – the drive for control. (The other activators include: competence, congruence, caring, connection, change, challenge, creative expression, contribution, and consciousness) I don’t think it is a coincidence that the control activator comes first. It’s hard for me to imagine tackling any of his other 9 activators without gaining simple control over the day.
His tip for success in this area that I’ve decided to adapt? Start each day developing a strategy for the day – rather than letting the inbox, the kid’s schedule, the everyday chores – control what gets accomplished each day. How many of you can relate to that? In fact, I think Buchard hit the nail on the head when he quoted Ralph Waldo Emerson. “We are always getting ready to live, but never living.”
