Easily Upcycle Aluminum Cans Into An Easter Grass Centerpiece

Upcycle Aluminum Cans into Easter Grass Centerpieces

I’ve got a quick and easy upcycle project for those aluminum cans you might otherwise throw out. Transform them into an inexpensive but darling Easter grass centerpiece for your Easter celebration.

Start by collecting and cleaning out aluminum cans. Decorate them with colored paper using your homemade nontoxic and eco friendly glue and perhaps even a strip of Washi Tape if you have it.

Decorated Upcycled Aluminum Cans

Next, gather your supplies. You need your decorated upcycled aluminum cans, small rocks, soil and wheat grass.

Here’s the secret to quickly making these centerpieces:

You can find wheat grass already sprouted and grown at the pet store!

Easily Make an Easter Grass Centerpiece

What a time saver! And if you are anything like me, and have waited until the last minute, you really don’t have time to grow your own wheat grass from seed. So pop on into your local pet store and pick up some wheat grass!

Make your Easter Grass Centerpiece:

  • Fill your upcycled aluminum can about 1/4 of the way with rocks
  • Add soil to reach about 1/2 way up the can
  • Transplant your wheat grass from it’s container into the can
  • Add water
  • Decorate your home!

How to Make Hand Sanitizer with All Natural Products

How to Make Hand Sanitizer with Witch Hazel and Aloe

Witch Hazel and Aloe Hand Sanitizer

How do you feel about Hand Sanitizer? Do you fall into the obsessive compulsive class where you can’t touch a public doorknob without a bottle at the ready? Or are you more in the “if it’s only been on the floor for 5 seconds, how dirty can it be?” camp?

Either way, I’ve got a recipe for Witch Hazel and Aloe Hand Sanitizer that is super easy to make and will leave your hands not only cleaner, but softer! That’s something those alcohol based hand sanitizers can’t say.

WHAT YOU WILL NEED:

  • 4 oz Aloe Vera Gel
  • 1/2 T Witch Hazel
  • 1 Vitamin E Capsule
  • Lavender Essential Oil

In a large bowl, whisk together the witch hazel and aloe vera gel. Poke a hole in the vitamin E capsule and squeeze the contents into the mixture. Whisk in. Add 5 to 10 drops of lavender oil. Pour into a 4 oz squeeze bottle to use. **If you have an opaque bottle, that will help the stability of the essential oil.**

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Witch Hazel – Witch Hazel extract is an all natural product with astringent, antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antibacterial, antifungal, and anesthetic properties. All of those properties make Witch Hazel perfect for use as a hand sanitizer.

Aloe Vera – The gel from the aloe vera plant is naturally moisturizing. The use of it in hand sanitizer helps keep your hands soft instead of drying it out. You want 100% Aloe Vera Gel – not the green or blue kind.

Lavender Oil – This essential oil is also an antiseptic, antibacterial and antimicrobial. Plus, it makes stuff smell good. You can find Lavender Oil here.

Vitamin E – The addition of the vitamin E should help keep the product stable.

If you don’t have the ingredients on hand, use your Vitacost Rewards. If you are a new Vitacost customer, they will give you $10 off your first order. They carry all of the ingredients you need, and all you do is pay $4.99 in shipping (shipping is free after $49)

Mix up a batch & sanitize away! You can feel good knowing that all the ingredients in this sanitizer are all natural! And as long as you’re making up all natural products, why not make Yoga Mat Cleaning Spray? OR Make up some Sunburn After Care!

Clean and Customize an Old Dry Erase White Board

How to Clean a Dry Erase White Board

For the last two years, this old dry erase white board has been sitting out in our garage behind the trash cans.
And here’s my confession: I really wanted to buy a new white board. The one in the garage was dirty, and the dry erase marker would not come off. In fact, it had become more permanent marker than dry erase marker. And far be it for me to mention, it wasn’t a very pretty board. It looked exactly like what it was: a reject from an old office space.

I knew getting a new one was a stupid thing to do. But I am part of the disposable generation. Getting something pretty and new is always so tempting.

Instead of buying new, I did a little research into how to clean an old dry erase board. I found a video on YouTube that recommended using a bit of baking soda mixed with water. HOWEVER, in the comments, someone said it would scratch the board. Hmmmm. I’ll admit it. I decided that if it scratched the board, it would be the perfect excuse to just buy a new one. Well let me tell you, add a little baking soda to some water, and it works like a champ! The marker came right off, but there was a bit of grit left on the board. I just used a wet rag to wipe it off.

So now I had a clean dry erase white board, but I did not have a pretty dry erase board. So I decided to fix that with a little bit of duct tape. After all, duct tape fixes everything, doesn’t it?

I picked two rolls of duct tape that complimented my black and white kitchen. It helped that I had a coupon!

I trimmed the silver rim of the dry erase board with the solid black duct tape to make it look like a frame, then I added a strip of the black lace to the inside. To get the look of mitered corners, I folded down the corners but left a small strip of the adhesive exposed. Then, I just stuck that small strip down. Walla.

Hot Appetizers: Easy Solution to Keep Them HOT!

Hot Appetizers

Are you serving hot appetizers at your party? What party? Any party. Your Super Bowl party, your Academy Awards party, your I’m turning 40…again party.

Whatever the occasion, when it comes to serving hot appetizers the question always becomes: How do I keep them hot?

I’ve got a really inexpensive solution that uses re-purposed items that not only will keep your appetizers hot – they will look elegant as well. And this solution costs a LOT less than a chafing dish!

I went to our Habitat for Humanity Restore to get the supplies for this project. Here is what I bought:

Hot appetizers supplies

  • One 12 x 12 granite tile $3.00
  • One chandelier shade made of glass $2.00

Other supplies you’ll need that you probably have at home or can buy at a craft store:

  • Glass beads
  • Tealights

Since I already had the glass beads and tealights, I don’t have a cost for you. Under $5 is my bet. So your total out-of-pocket should be less than $10.

About the glass chandelier shade:

  • Select a shade with a scalloped bottom. Why? Your tealight will need oxygen to stay lit. Having a scalloped bottom helps.
  • A scalloped shade doesn’t allow the tealight ot get enough oxygen, so you need the glass beads.

Here is how to assemble your hot appetizer plate:

  • Attach the glass beads to the rim of the glass shade using an adhesive that will work on glass.

Attached Glass Beads

  • Heat the oven to 200 degrees.
  • Warm the granite tile in the oven for 10 minutes.

WARNING: Your tile will be HOT! Do not burn yourself!

  • Light the tealight and put under the glass chandelier shade.

Tealight

  • Place the hot tile on top of the glass chandelier shade.
  • Add your hot appetizers.

Hot Appetizers

The tealight will keep your granite tile and appetizers smoking hot for the duration of your party!
