Homemade Gingerbread Latte Syrup Recipe

Homemade Gingerbread Latte Syrup Recipe

There are two very distinct tastes that make up gingerbread: ginger and molasses. To make a truly great gingerbread latte, you want to capture those two flavors in your homemade gingerbread latte syrup.

In order to get this genuine gingerbread flavor, you must, must, must use sucanat instead of sugar. As I’ve mentioned many times before, sucanat is a less processed form of sugar where the molasses is not separated out – like it is with refined white sugar. You can use only sucanat in this recipe to get that rich molasses flavor without the molasses overpowering your syrup.

As an added bonus, sucanat is considered a better whole food choice than refined white sugar.

If you are like me, and molasses is a favorite flavor, add the 2 tablespoons in the recipe. When you do this, the molasses will become the dominant flavor – not the ginger. So you need to play with it to get the mix right for your taste buds.

Time to mix up your syrup:

Homemade Gingerbread Latte Syrup

Ingredients

  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup sucanat
  • 2 tablespoons molasses (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon ground ginger
  • 1 5-inch cinnamon stick
  • 8 whole cloves
  • 1/2 teaspoon allspice berries
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg

Instructions

  1. Bring water, sucanat, and molasses (optional) just to a boil.
  2. Immediately lower heat to a simmer and add all spices.
  3. Simmer for 30 minutes.
  4. Strain into a large jar. Allow to cool before refrigerating.

Super Simple Matcha Green Tea Latte Recipe

Super Simple Matcha Green Tea Latte Recipe

Have you tried Matcha Green Tea Powder? It has a distinct flavor that can be quite addictive. Combined with milk and sweetener and served up in a matcha green tea latte, it is totally addictive.

Matcha Green Tea Powder has both caffeine and a healthy dose of antioxidants. I find breakfast is the perfect time to load up on both! I’ve heard of people who have actually given up coffee and become exclusive matcha drinkers.

I’m far from a break-up with my morning cup of joe, but I like to flirt with matcha just fine.

To make a really great homemade latte, you gotta get the AerolatteHand Held Milk Frother

aerolatte frother

A frother costs under $20 and I’ve had mine for almost 10 years.  It has saved me tons of money since I can now make all my favorite coffee drinks at home. Chai lattes, peppermint lattes, pumpkin lattes and gingerbread lattes now all get made at home using real, whole food ingredients, for pennies on the dollar for what I’d pay at Starbucks.

If you don’t have one, put it on your wish list!

Once you start making this super simple matcha green tea latte recipe for yourself, you might find yourself in an on-going relationship with this awesome coffee alternative.

Super Simple Matcha Green Tea Latte Recipe

Hot Apple Cider Mix | Recipe Perfect for Homemade Gift Giving

Hot Apple Cider Mix Recipe

Squeeee! That’s how I feel about this Hot Apple Cider Mix that is perfect for homemade gift giving.

I love Hot Apple Cider. Is any other drink so absolutely perfect on a crisp fall day or when the snow starts to fall?

A quick word about ingredients. I used Sucnat brown sugar as the sugar in this mix. If you aren’t familiar with Sucnat – it is a natural, less processed form of brown sugar. If you haven’t used it before, I need to caution you. Sucnat is just crushed sugar cane. Without the extra processing brown sugar undergoes, it still contains all of the cane’s natural molasses, and has a distinct, natural molasses flavor.

You can use brown sugar in this mix if you want traditional flavor for your hot apple cider. If you are choosing to go the whole food, all natural route, I hope you’ll give sucnat a try. The flavor is unique but still delicious.

Hot Apple Cider Mix Ingredients

This project does take a little bit of time because you have to dry the orange peels. But drying the peels doesn’t require you do anything but babysit the oven.

Here’s how to dry your orange peels:

  1. Start by juicing the orange.
  2. Use a spoon and scrape out any additional pulp until all you are left with is the orange peel.
  3. Dry in a 200 degree oven for 4 to 6 hours. Check frequently. If after a few hours they start to look brown, turn your oven down to 100 to complete the drying process. They need to be thoroughly dried so they don’t spoil
  4. Allow to cool.

Once your peels are dry, call the kids! Assembling the Hot Apple Cider Mix is a fun afternoon activity to do with kids of all ages.

To create your Hot Apple Cider Mix gift:

  1. Add 3 allspice and two cloves to the bottom of the orange.
  2. Fill the orange peel with sucnat or brown sugar.
  3. Trim your cinnamon stick to the correct length to look like a body.
  4. Using 4 cloves, make arms and legs.
  5. Use an allspice as the head. {I picked through mine to find one the appropriate size.}

Why add the allspice and cloves to the bottom? They don’t “fit” with the cinnamon stick body, so you just hide them. That way the apple cider will be spiced correctly, but your gift is stinkin’ cute!

Hot Apple Cider Mix Homemade Gift

Present your Homemade Hot Apple Cider Mix with a bottle of your favorite local apple cider. You may want to attach instructions to your gift:

Agua de Pepino

Here’s a healthy drink post with thanks to Katie of Nourishing Simplicity.

Cool and Refreshing Agua de Pepino.jpg

A glass full of an icy beverage hits the spot on a hot day. The Americas, specifically Mexico and Central America, are famous for their “Aguas Frescas” (fresh waters). These cool and refreshing drinks are water blended with fruits, vegetables, grains or flowers, sweetened with sugar. You can stop at almost any taqueria in Mexico for a carne asada taco and buy a cup of Agua de Jamaica (Hibiscus) and  Agua de Horchata (Rice and Cinnamon). Then there are the less common ones, like Agua de Melon (Cantaloupe), Agua de Sandia (Watermelon) and Agua de Pepino (Cucumber).

Today I want to introduce you to Agua de Pepino, a cool and refreshing drink flavored with cucumber and lime juice. Unlike the traditional version that is loaded with cane sugar, this twist is sweetened with just a touch of raw honey. For those of you that think drinking cucumber is weird  ~ just try it! You’ll be pleasantly surprised.

Agua de Pepino is the perfect pick me up when you want to sip on something that is refreshing and  just a bit sweet!

Agua de Pepino

1  english cucumber, peeled
¼ cup raw honey
¼ cup lime juice. freshly squeezed
6 cups of water

  1. Peel the cucumber.
  2. Quarter the cucumber and place in a blender.
  3. Add the lime juice, raw honey and water.
  4. Blend on high for 2 minutes are until smooth.
  5. Strain though a fine mesh colander or cheese cloth to remove the plulp.
  6. Put in the fridge until completely chilled or serve over ice.
