I Drank Cayenne Pepper Water For 7 Weeks and Here’s What Happened

What happened when I started drinking cayenne pepper water.

What happened when I drank cayenne pepper water for 7 weeks. Is it worth trying? What do I do now.

I’m going to start by saying I always thought drinking cayenne pepper water was completely bogus.

But I’ve since changed my mind.

Let me give you a little background.

In January 2016, I was asked by a friend if I wanted to join in on a one week clean eating challenge.

Like a good American, I had overeaten during the holidays. I wanted accountability to get back on track. So I joined the clean eating challenge.

We started the challenge on January 18th. We had a one week meal plan we were to follow.

The meal plan said we were to drink 8 ounces of warm water with 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper every morning.

Is there anything on this planet that sounds grosser than warm cayenne pepper water? Particularly first thing in the morning?

But here’s the deal. It was a challenge. We were in a Facebook group. Apparently, I am uber competitive. I was going to be the one person on that challenge that followed the eating plan to a T.

Which meant I had to start my day with cayenne pepper water.

What happened when I drank cayenne pepper water for 7 weeks. Is it worth trying? What do I do now.

I completely surprised myself. I liked it! But I wasn’t sure if I like it because I had a cold and the warming sensation just felt really good, or if I really liked it.

I continued drinking it every day.

What led me to really like it was the fact that I lost 3 pounds in that week – mainly from my belly.

Yes, I was eating clean. But I have never, and I mean ever, lost 3 pounds in one week. Ever.

My body type is such that I carry all my extra weight in my belly. I’m the woman you always want to know if I am pregnant or not. Seriously. (and no I’m not pregnant!)

After the first week, I decided to start adding a half a lemon to my cayenne pepper water. If you haven’t tried lemon water first thing, here are all the reasons you should.

I drank cayenne pepper lemon water first thing in the morning for 7 weeks. My total weight loss was 5 pounds. During those 7 weeks, I only followed a clean eating plan for one of them.

If you do a little research, you’ll find science believes cayenne pepper and one of it’s components – capsaican – “could” assist in weight loss.

What happened when I drank cayenne pepper water for 7 weeks. Is it worth trying? What do I do now.

I would definitely say it helped me to lose weight and boosted my metabolism!

So why don’t I drink it daily?

Crazy, right? But here’s the deal: I’m addicted to caffeine and the boost I get from my morning cup of coffee.

That’s right. I’d rather have coffee than a boosted metabolism.

While cayenne pepper water hasn’t remained a daily habit, if I ever get serious about trying to cut weight, I will use it, and my fat-flushing detox drink to aide my weight loss efforts.

I’m convinced it had a positive effect on my weight loss and that you have nothing to lose by trying it.

Natural Remedies for Feeling Sad

My go-to natural remedies for feeling sad.
What are the natural remedies for feeling sad? These lifestyle, hormonal and herbal treatments may be exactly what you need to pick up your mood.

The last few weeks have been hard in my house.

Life is still good overall. But as a mom, I’ve been dealing with things that have made me sad.

Not depressed. I want to be sure to emphasize that. I would not say I’m dealing with depression. (If you think you are depressed, I’d encourage you to get professional help.)

No, what I’m feeling is the sadness that comes with living life.

My daughter just went back to college for her sophomore year. And I miss her.

I don’t miss her like I did last year, her freshman year, but I find myself thinking about her and missing her several times a day.

While I’m delighted at how well she is doing, the fact is, I like her. I miss her. And missing her makes me sad.

At the same time, I’m dealing with a 13 year old dog whose body is degenerating in front of my eyes. There were several days when we were worried he was facing complete paralysis of his hind legs.

I’m happy to report we’ve found a combination of “bed rest” and doggy acupuncture has helped him to walk on his own again, although his legs do slide out once in a while.

Still, knowing that I’m spending the last few months with my favorite companion makes me sad. I wish a dog’s lifespan matched our own.

There is no shame in feeling sad. Life can be difficult. In those circumstances, it’s important to use self care. So I wanted to share the natural remedies for feeling sad that I have found work for me.

What are the natural remedies for feeling sad? These lifestyle, hormonal and herbal treatments may be exactly what you need to pick up your mood.

Natural Remedies for Feeling Sad

SLEEP

The first step to dealing with sadness is to make sure you are getting enough sleep.

Of course, when feeling sad, we often spend our nights tossing and turning and fretting over the reasons for our sadness.

There are two natural supplements you can take to help you get enough sleep: Melatonin and Valerian.

Melatonin is a natural hormone that our bodies need to sleep.

Valerian Root is a natural sedative that has been used for promoting sleep for centuries.

I’ve taken both and have a definite preference for melatonin. Valerian, in my opinion, tastes awful. Even the capsules.

I find melatonin works to help me sleep. The major complaint about melatonin is you can have crazy dreams. I’ve never had these dreams, but my husband says it is like watching TV all night long.

Both are effective, you just need to decide for yourself whether you want an herbal remedy or a hormonal one.

EXERCISE

For immediate relief of sad feelings, getting out and doing some cardio activity provides a natural uplift.

Exercise increases the body’s levels of seratonin and releases the endorphins that help you feel good.

I highly recommending something as simple as a neighborhood walk to help improve your mood. You might want to put in some earphones and listen to whatever music you find uplifting.

ST. JOHN’S WORT

St. John’s Wort is another herbal remedy that has been used for centuries.

With St. John’s Wort, you may not notice results right away. It make take a week or two before you begin to experience the “lightness” that people feel from consistent use of this herb.

The effectiveness of St. John’s Wort is due to the fact it works on the nervous system as a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI). While prozac is also an SSRI, the difference with St. John’s Wort is it works on additional neurotransmitters as well.

There are drug interaction concerns with this herb, so be sure to check with your doctor to see if it is okay to take while you are on other medications.

SAMe

SAMe is a natural compound formed in our bodies from the amino acid methionine. Methylation plays an important part in the body in the development of mood enhancing neurotransmitters such as dopamine and serotonin.

As people age, the body gets low on methionine. SAMe is also great for aging joints. If you consider yourself in the “older” population, this might be a great supplement for you.

Many people report SAMe works quicker than St. John’s Wort.

I recommend taking either SAMe or St. John’s Wort – not both.

FISH OIL

Are you taking fish oil daily yet? I want you to get some ASAP.

In addition to the myriad health benefits Omega-3s provide, they also work to maintain a healthy emotional balance.

green smoothie ingredients

I usually put mine in a green smoothie.

What have you found to be effective in helping overcome sadness?

Homemade Natural Eye Makeup Remover That Works!

Ready to try a homemade natural eye makeup remover that works? I’ve got the best recipe.

Ready to try a homemade natural eye makeup remover that works? I've got the best recipe that will take off your eye makeup quickly and easily.

Making your own natural eye makeup remover is so simple and requires very few ingredients.

This best part about this formula is that IT WORKS!

I’ve tried it on several different types of mascara – all with fantastic results!

The first thing you’ll need is distilled water. If you don’t have distilled water, you will need to bring tap water to the boiling point then allow it to cool before proceeding.

Please do not skip this step. You’re dealing with your eyes, so it’s important to start with sterile ingredients.

Next, you need a carrier oil. I personally use avocado oil. (I also use avocado oil to get rid of my red bumps)

Avocado oil is perfect for the eye area because it has a natural concentration of both Vitamins A and E. This makes it a great choice for dry, dehydrated and mature skin.

Next, you need to pick a baby shampoo.

Ready to try a homemade natural eye makeup remover that works? I've got the best recipe that will take off your eye makeup quickly and easily.
I’ve tested this formula with both Burt’s Bees Tear Free Shampoo and BeautyCounterKids Nice Do Shampoo.

The Burt’s Bee shampoo is actually a 3 on the EWG Skin Deep database. However, I like that it is tear free.

The Nice Do shampoo is actually a 1 – meaning it is the safest formulation you can buy. However, it is not a tear free formula. The thing I do like about it is the scent. So there’s that.

Both baby shampoos worked great. You’ll need to decide what is most important to you.

NATURAL EYE MAKEUP REMOVER

2 Tablespoons Baby Shampoo
1 Tablespoon Avocado Oil
1 Cup Distilled Water

Combine all ingredients in a soap dispenser.

To Use: Shake ingredients before each use. Apply to a washcloth and then apply to eye area. Rinse off immediately.

I use these baby soft washcloths to wipe off my eye make-up.

These cloths are so soft – if they made a giant sized onesie out of this material – I would wear it.

Not. Even. Kidding.

Do they get stained by the mascara? Kinda. Really, it depends on your brand of mascara.

The washcloths are essentially re-useable eye makeup remover pads. I use them then toss in the laundry. It’s another way I can be green and save money.

Give this natural eye makeup remover and try – I’d love to know how it works for you.

All Natural Dog Care: Flea and Tick Control

This all natural dog care review has been compensated by Only Natural Pets. All opinions are mine alone.
All natural dog care flea and tick control using essential oils that are safe for pets.

Copper on the path in our backyard.

Welcome to my backyard! I love our backyard – and so do our dogs. We live on a heavily wooded hillside where 80% of the yard is left “wild.”

While I love the low maintenance aspect of our wooded lot, the dogs love that it attracts all types of wildlife.

Unfortunately, that wildlife includes all manner of creepy and crawly insects.

While fleas aren’t a huge concern in my part of Colorado, we definitely have ticks. And ticks love heavily wooded areas. Areas just like my backyard.

I fear ticks. While most people know about Lyme disease, did you know ticks can also carry Colorado tick fever?

Finding an all natural solution to flea and tick control is important to my pets and my family.

Any time I sit down in the house, I end up with Nina on my lap.

All natural dog care flea and tick control using essential oils that are safe for pets.

Having the constant contact between Nina and myself means I’m very aware that any little creepy crawlies that attach themselves to her feathery fur can easily get transferred to me.

I recently was able to try Only Natural Pets Flea and Tick Control products. With their all natural dog care line, I learned you can effectively fight fleas and ticks without pesticides.

The products I instantly fell in love with use essential oils. Their Easy Defense Herbal Oil Blend  contains neem, citronella, lavender, cedar, and other essential oils. It’s easy to apply using a dropper then rubbing it in.

I love the smell of this herbal oil blend. Copper thinks it smells great too!

Having animals that smell nice is a plus in my book.

While the dropper is great on Copper’s short coat, I love the Easy Defense Herbal Spray for Nina’s long hair.

The smell is definitely stronger. However, since Nina can start to stink in between groomings, it has the added benefit of being like a doggie perfume on her. 🙂

I’d definitely recommend spraying it on outside because it is potent.

I could still smell the herbal spray on her 7 days after applying it. It is that potent.

The other product that is a huge hit in our house is the Only Natural Pets Barrier Bites. These bites contain both brewer’s yeast and garlic. The dogs love them but they have no idea that ingesting them makes them less appetizing to biting insects.

It’s an easy way to get your dogs natural protection. I would definitely recommend adding these treats to your natural dog care routine. If you are going to give your dogs treats anyway, they may as well have some added benefits, am I right?

If you are like me, and you look for non-toxic but effective all natural dog care solutions, I’d love for you to give any of the Only Natural Pet Products a try. They have an entire line of products designed to prevent, control and repel fleas and ticks. Fixer Upper Design Style Ideas For Your Kitchen

Fixer Upper Design Style Ideas for Your Kitchen. Steal some of Joanna's design style and add it to your own kitchen!

I am in LOVE with the show Fixer Upper. Are you?

Oh. My. Word. Why isn’t Joanna Gaines my BFF? Why doesn’t she perform miracles on 1950s ranchers in Colorado Springs instead of in Waco, TX???

I enjoy the show so much, my friends and I talk about making the 14 hour road trip to Waco, TX just to go to Magnolia’s. (not kidding)

When we purchased our home 2 years ago, I shared how I remodeled our kitchen using Craig’s List.

I love to upcycle and shop thrift store finds…just like Joanna. (You know in every episode you’ll see Joanna out scouring some antiques store for the perfect details for her Fixer Upper.)

Unlike Joanna, I have no real decorating sense of style. None. Nada. Zippo.

Sooooo, I’ve been studying the photos from the Fixer Upper remodels and I’ve found some awesome accents that show up repeatedly on the show.

Now, if you can find these items in a thrift store – buy them there! Use these design style ideas as a list to use while you thrift shop. But, if you simply can’t find them second hand, I’ve got some resources for you.

In keeping with what you will see on Fixer Upper, I tried to hunt down items that are American made or vintage/retro.

So here’s how you can copy some of the Fixer Upper design style in your own home.

We are going to start with a galvanized tray like in the kitchen detail below:

galvanized tray Photo Cred

Joanna oftens styles scenes with a Galvanized Tray. You can use it indoors or out and use it to serve items or to display them. (Don’t forget to get Biodegradable Green Striped Straws!)

There are two things I want to point out in this kitchen redo:

First, check out the retro Kitchen Scale next to the stove. It makes an appearance in so many of Joanna’s kitchens.

Second, look on the actual stovetop and see the Le Creuset Dutch Oven. Again, you will see this dutch oven out on many of her stoves.

Honestly? I just can’t do the price of the Le Creuset. It simply isn’t in my budget. So here’s a much more reasonably priced alternative: Lodge Dutch Oven. Lodge cast iron is American Made!

Okay, now check out this before and after:

Do you see the scale and the dutch oven again???
It’s her thing!!!

On to this gorgeous kitchen:

Do you spy with your little eye the iron cookbook stand? Joanna shows a cookbook stand in many of her kitchens. This Iron Cookbook Stand has the same little weights you use to hold your cookbook pages down. Cute, isn’t it?

There is so much to love about this kitchen (starting with no dirty dishes in the sink!):

mint green colander photo credit

But what I want to point out the vintage Mint Green Colander next to the sink. This may be an item you can find while thrifting or garage sale-ing. Or check in your grandmother’s cupboards! If not, you can get yours here.

This picture is similar to the one of the galvanized tray:

What I want to point out is: in almost every Fixer Upper I’ve seen, there are mason jars somewhere. They hold drinks, they hold straws, they hold flowers, they hold utensils, they hold crayons. To capture the Fixer Upper look, you just have to get yourself some quilted mason jars

The mason jars are sitting atop a serving board. Scroll through these pictures again and see how often she uses serving boards. It’s key to capturing the Fixer Upper style.

This makes me squeal. See the Anchor Hoking glass jars holding flour? I have some in my kitchen already!!! I’d like to say Joanna copied me, but somehow I don’t think so. (I really love these scoops to go with my jars. Just sayin.)

Look to the right of the stove in this swoon-worthy kitchen:

white crock wooden utensils photo credit

Do you see the white crock and the wooden utensils? Keep your eye out for them in all her kitchens! (You noticed the cookbook stand again, right?)

Neither you nor I may ever get to have a home designed and styled by Joanna, but we can copy her style ideas pretty inexpensively.

Do you already have any of these items in your house?

Homemade Linen Spray: Sweet Rose and Lavender Mist

Sweet Rose and Lavender Mist: a homemade linen spray.

Treat yourself to a luxurious homemade linen spray. This sweet rose and lavender mist will lull you to sleep when you use it before bed.

A friend of mine recently returned from a trip to Santa Fe. While she was there she stayed at a hotel that had, “The best turn down service.”

Turn down service?

We travel about 5 times per year for volleyball tournaments, and we stay as a team in decent hotel chains. None of which offer a “turn down service”.

She described to me the lit fire, laid out robes, soft music, a microfiber cloth laid out by their sunglasses, charging cords wrapped with ribbon…

All I could think was I wanted turn down service at my house every night!

Which is why I now have a Sweet Rose and Lavender Mist linen spray on my bedside table.

Treat yourself to a luxurious homemade linen spray. This sweet rose and lavender mist will lull you to sleep when you use it before bed.

No one will be turning down my bed for me at night, but I can give myself the simple gift of a luxurious aromatherapy spray.

It’s the little things, am I right?

While contemplating the perfect deluxe linen spray, I landed on a rose and lavender scent.

The scent from the rose hydrosol promotes well-being and peace, while the scent from the lavender essential oil promotes calm and relaxation. It’s a perfect combination for encouraging an optimal night’s sleep.

Sweet Rose and Lavender Mist

3 ounces organic rose hydrosol <–What I Used
1 ounce distilled water
1 tablespoon vodka
10 drops vegetable glycerin <–What I Used
45 drops lavender essential oil

Combine all ingredients in a glass spray bottle.

To Use: Shake vigorously before misting your linens before bed.

Treat yourself to a luxurious homemade linen spray. This sweet rose and lavender mist will lull you to sleep when you use it before bed.

I used a 4 ounce glass spray bottle for this recipe. However, it would be perfect for dividing into two 2 ounce spray bottles. Use one for yourself, give the other as a gift!

While this is an excellent mist to spray on your pillow before bed, you can also use it on your clothes before ironing or on your clothes. Or, spray on clothes before putting them into storage for the winter. It will repel moths.

This formulation should not stain any fabrics. However, it’s always a good idea to test it in a small area before liberally applying.

Happy homemade turn down service everyone!

DIY Natural Body Powder Talc Free Recipe!

How to Make a Natural Body Powder Talc Free.

Here's a quick way to make your own natural body powder talc free! Highly absorbent with a fresh, energizing scent you'll love.

When the heat, humidity, and sweat make you damp and uncomfortable, you need a natural body powder to absorb dampness and ward off odors.

Or what if you’ve overslept? A sprinkle of talc free body powder can also help you go an extra day without a shower.

So why go talc free when making a body powder? After all, talc is a natural mineral that is highly absorbent.

The problem with talc is that can be contaminated with asbestos, a known carcinogen.  Johnson & Johnson has been held responsible for ovarian cancer because of it’s products containing talc.

With a few simple ingredients, you can make your own natural body powder at home – free of any potentially carcinogenic substance – that works just as well and smells even better.

This DIY recipe for talc free powder has the same two main ingredients in many of the natural brands of body powder – cornstarch and sodium bicarbonate (otherwise known as baking soda).

Cornstarch is highly absorbent while the sodium bicarbonate has antibacterial properties that can ward off acne.

It’s important to note this recipe does call for non gmo cornstarch. Corn is one of the most highly genetically modified crops out there. If you are skipping the talc, make sure you are also skipping the pesticides used on gmo crops.

Natural Body Powder

Natural Body Powder Talc Free Recipe

What You Need:

½ cup non gmo cornstarch
½ cup baking soda
10 drops organic lavender essential oil
10 drops organic sweet orange essential oil
10 drops organic peppermint essential oil

Directions:

In a large bowl, whisk together cornstarch and baking powder. Drop with essential oils, then whisk again until well blended. Store in a jar with a shaker lid or use a powder puff, organic cotton ball or brush.

Make sure to store your powder in a glass or other non-reactive container. Citrus essential oils don’t play well with plastic.

I love the scent of this essential oil combination in this recipe. It’s fresh and energizing. However, feel free to use any essential oil blend you enjoy.
