Easy Wassail Recipe: A Homemade Holiday Gift

This easy wassail recipe makes a thoughtful homemade holiday gift.

This easy wassail recipe makes a thoughtful homemade holiday gift. This traditional drink can be spiked and heated on the stove or in a crockpot.

Sometimes you just strike idea gold! That’s how I feel about this wassail in a gift jar.

We have several Christmas parties and open houses we’ll be attending, and I’ve been looking for a homemade holiday gift idea that was out of the ordinary.

I gotta tell you, I’m so over bringing a bottle of wine. Unless you know someone’s favorite, it can be a real shot in the dark to match the right wine with a person’s taste. Am I right?

So I started looking for a gift that was relatively inexpensive. I also wanted it to be a consumable so I wasn’t adding to anyone’s clutter.

Above all, I was looking for a gift that was festive!

What could be more festive this time of year than wassail? So I decided to tuck all the ingredients into a large jar for gift giving.

I went to Target and I found:

1.5 gallon jar (If not in your Target, you can get it here.)
1 Tea Ball
Ribbon

Wassail in a jar gift supplies.

Y’all – this jar is just $15! All in, I spent a little over $27.

Then I went to my grocery store to pick up wassail ingredients.

Apple cider makes the base of any wassail recipe. You will frequently find orange juice or cranberry juice in a wassail recipe.

To give this as a gift, I couldn’t do orange juice because it needs refrigerated. I didn’t do cranberry juice because of it’s taste. (Have you ever tasted plain cranberry juice? So sour! I would have needed sugar, and I don’t really do excess sugar.)

Pomegranate juice is 100% juice, tastes great with apple cider, PLUS it fit in the jar. 😉 So my wassail is made with pomegranate juice!

Easy wassail recipe ingredients.

The traditional ingredient to spike wassail is bourbon, so I bought a small bottle of that too. You’ll see on the instructions I made the brandy optional.

The last things to go in your gift jar are the fresh ingredients.

Traditional wassail spices.

I put the spices in the tea ball and tied it on to the jar. The cinnamon sticks I dropped in the jar. They’d probably be really cute tied to the ribbon, but I’m just now thinking of it. Oh well. An idea for you.

All of these ingredients do fit in the jar, but you have to put the pomegranate juice and the brandy in BEFORE you add the apple cider. It’s a bit like a puzzle but I promise it all works!

Easy Wassail Recipe

1 32-ounce bottle apple cider
1 16-ounce bottle 100% pomegranate juice
1 200-ml bottle brandy
2 lemons
1 orange
12 whole cloves
1 whole nutmeg, smashed with a hammer
5 3-inch cinnamon sticks

INSTRUCTIONS:

You can download and print these instructions on card stock to include with your gift.

If you don’t think your recipient will want their Wassail spiked, you can choose to leave the brandy out of the gift. However, you don’t want your bottles to slide inside the glass jar. To prevent glass clanking on glass, you could add an extra orange, or you could pick up some festive holiday napkins to tuck in to your gift jar.

Graduation Gift Idea: Study Session Survival Kit

Graduation gift idea: Study Session Survival Kit

Graduation Gift Idea for a Study Session Survival Kit

I’m in the middle of another graduation season! It’s so fun to watch kids I’ve known since they were in preschool walk across the stage to get their diploma.

As part of graduation season, we get invited to A LOT of celebrations.

I want to honor these kids, but I also need to maintain a budget.

For the girls we don’t know as well, or haven’t had a close personal relationship, I’m giving them these graduation gifts once again.

Since I now have a kiddo in college, I asked her what she actually used at school.

She told me one of the most useful things she brought to college was her Quirky Power Strip. She said it was awesome for late night study sessions when everyone needed a place to plug in their laptops.

Honestly? Giving just a power strip seemed kinda lame. It just doesn’t scream of a celebration. But tucking it into a Study Session Survival Kit seemed like something fun that I would like to get!

IDEAS FOR A STUDY SESSION SURVIVAL KIT:

  • Quirky Power Strip
  • Snacks (I let the girls pick. They wanted a salty and a sweet. We went with popcorn and fruit strips.)
  • Gum
  • Caffeinated Beverages
  • Something Fun – We went with a beach ball
  • Optional: A gift card for a local delivery place like a Jimmy John’s or a pizza place.

I packed everything up in a tub that they could also use in their dorm room.

I chose to add a chalkboard label to the lid of my gift. I wrote “Late Night Study Session” on the label.

Turn Grocery Store Flowers Into a Stunning Arrangement

I’ve finally learned the secret to arranging grocery store flowers into a stunning arrangement and I’m sharing it with you!

How to make stunning arrangements with grocery store flowers. Once you learn the simple trick, you'll find your flower arrangements look professionally done.

Arranging flowers has always perplexed me. For the life of me I could not figure out how to make my flowers look like anything but a bunch of flowers stuck in a vase.

You know what I’m talking about, right?

But I’ve unearthed the secret to bright, full arrangements that look professionally done.

No more sad bouquets. Nope. We are all about to become flower arranging ninjas.

Just FYI, I picked up this bouquet from Costco. I tend to buy my flowers there because of the price, and as I talked about here, their roses are Rainforest Alliance certified.

Let’s start with the basics for any flower arrangements.

Basic Rules for Arranging Grocery Store Flowers

  • Start by stripping all the leaves from flower stems. Once a leaf touches water, it rots quickly.
  • Select a vase where the top is wider than the bottom.
  • When selecting your bouquet, pick one that has 2 to 3 of the same kind of flowers that stand out to your eye and that will form the center of your arrangement.
  • The height of your final arrangement should be one and one half times the height of the vase.
  • Don’t overthink it! Just play with height and color.
  • Once you’ve built your arrangement, be sure to change the water every other day.
  • Keep your arrangement out of direct sunlight to prolong it’s life.

Arrangement Tutorial

Take the vase you have selected and use scotch or wasabi tape to section off the top as in the picture below.

Once you’ve prepped your vase, start with any pieces of greenery and stick them in the outermost sections.

Find the flowers that are the most prominent in shape and color. In this bouquet it was the bright pink gerber daisies. Cut the dominant flowers to different heights and add them to the center square of the tape shape you made.

Start to fill in with the other flowers starting with the highest impact flowers and building outward. Use the tape squares. Add flowers so they are evenly distributed amongst the squares.

Continue to arrange flowers until you like what you see!

The final arrangement! Ta-Da! Having the tape grid at the top of the vase really does help in placing the flowers in different sections. Selecting a vase with a wide top gives the arrangement width.

It really is that easy. If you use washi tape like I did, you will probably want to remove it. Scotch tape is better camouflaged by the flowers.

2 Ingredient Homemade Silly Putty Recipe

A homemade silly putty recipe that needs just 2 ingredients.
Two Ingredient Homemade Silly Putty Recipe

Kids driving you crazy?

Why not try a little science experiment at home? With two ingredients you probably already have in your kitchen, you can make homemade silly putty.

A lot of this recipe depends on the kind of dish soap you have at home. Some brands just plain work better than others.

The only way you’ll know how yours works is to give it a go.

After we made our silly putty and played with it for a bit, I put it in a sealed container and kept it next to the sink. For the next few days, we used it to wash our hands with! That proved to be almost more fun than playing with the silly putty. It definitely encouraged hand washing.

Homemade Silly Putty Recipe

Ingredients:

1/4 cup non-GMO cornstarch <— I use this brand
3 tablespoons dish soap

Stir these two ingredients together then start kneading them with your hands.

That’s it! You now have your own homemade silly putty.

I threw together a quick 30 second video so you can see exactly how this recipe is supposed to work.

Can’t see the video? Watch it here.

While this recipe produces a silly putty that can stretch and mold into shapes, I tried to use it to lift images off newspaper and it did not work. I was a little bummed about that because that was my favorite part of playing with silly putty as a kid.

However, my kids had never played with silly putty before, so to them, the fact that these two ingredients formed something that could stretch and shrink and ball up…was fun enough.

Did you play with silly putty as a kid?

How to Remove Candle Wax from Glass Jars

How to remove candle wax from glass jars so you can reuse them.

This foolproof method for how to remove candle wax from glass jars works every time with little effort.

Mrs. Meyer’s candles are my total favorite. Love, love, love them!

As I’ve mentioned before, I wait all year for the holiday scents – and in particular, the orange clove candles – to arrive.

Every season I buy at least 3 or 4 and I burn them throughout the holiday season.

Once the candles are down to the wick, with very little wax remaining, I like to remove the candle wax so I can reuse the jars.

If you’ve never purchased a Mrs. Meyer’s candle before, the jars are a pretty shape, and the lid screws on tight. They are perfect for upcycling!

Removing the wax from a glass candle jar is actually quite easy.

How to Remove Candle Wax from Glass Jars

Start by placing the jar in the freezer. Allow the candle wax to freeze for at least 30 minutes.

Next, use a sharp knife to crack the wax.

This foolproof method for how to remove candle wax from glass jars works every time with little effort.

Once you’ve cracked the wax and broken it up a bit with your knife, use a spoon or butter knife to pry the wax out.

This foolproof method for how to remove candle wax from glass jars works every time with little effort.

The wick may still be stuck to the bottom of the jar, and there will be some wax left clinging to the sides.

Make sure your jar has come to room temperature (if the jar is too cold, it will break!) and pour in boiling water.

This foolproof method for how to remove candle wax from glass jars works every time with little effort.

The boiling water should remove the wick and the remaining wax.

I like to stick my jars in the dishwasher just to get them thoroughly clean.

Voila! Your jars are now ready to use.
