Did you see the movie It’s Complicated? The garden has created quite a fuss.
As I start out planning our first real garden (not a bunch of pots of tomatoes like I usually do) I’ll admit I have a crush on a garden like this and would love to recreate it. But let’s get real. While I’ve always found the idea of a potager garden quite romantic, having very distinct memories of my grandmother’s gardens and the taste of fresh blueberries and picking sugar beans right off the vine, I’m certain our first efforts won’t produce quite the same results. (however, my fingers are crossed!)
I’m afraid we have quite a ways to go before my garden will in any way, shape or form resemble the one in the movie.
Here’s what we started with:
This is the southern side of our yard. The grass was all killed this summer while we did construction. The bushes were planted sometime in the 70′s or 80′s and the juniper bush was out of control!
Here is what it looked like yesterday, a week after the first picture:
I’ll have you know that bush was hiding no fewer than 15 tennis balls, a baseball, a Christmas squeeky toy, a cat’s collar (whose we have no idea!) and several bricks and lava landscape rocks! How knows how many fox and raccoons used that bush!?! We were just glad to find no one still living there.
We still need to scrape the rock and build the raised beds.
I’m sure you’ve figured out that this work has not been cheap. So look for my next garden post on how I’ve saved money getting the plants and seeds to fill it!
