As you know, I live in Colorado Springs, and with the recent Waldo Canyon Fire, I made some emergency evacuation bags.
Thankfully, the fire is now out. However, the impression is that all of Colorado Springs has burnt to the ground, and there is no reason to visit.
I’m happy to announce that Colorado Springs is still standing and still beautiful. I’ve taken part in the Toyota RAV4 Adventure Club, which is challenging people to get off the beaten path. Since people are under the impression Colorado Springs might not be worth the visit, I’ve made a route here that takes you past some of Colorado Springs’ secret treasures.
My route starts at the Broadmoor Hotel. It’s an easy landmark to find, which is why I started my route there. It is on everyone’s radar, but there are some unexpected sites behind it.
Follow my path behind the hotel, and you’ll find Star Kempf’s home. Star was a sculptor who erected these crazy structures in his yard that act kinda like pinwheels when the weather is right. I’ve taken Colorado Springs natives there and they had no idea of its existence! Definitely meets my criteria for off the beaten path!
Continue on my route and you will be at the entrance to Cheyenne Canon. The Starsmore Center is at the entrance. It wasn’t open, but the hummingbird garden out front had attracted several hummingbirds while I was there.
I ended my route at a coffee shop. {This shouldn’t surprise anyone!} It looks just like another house in the neighborhood, so you have to be on the lookout, or you’ll pass it by. Sometimes when you explore, you find these hidden gems that only the locals know.
