Quick and Healthy Whole Food Recipes
Every week I feature quick healthy recipes perfect for a Whole Food Diet. What is a Whole Food Diet?
A Whole Food Diet means:
- Buying the bulk of our food in the same form God made it.
- Buying whole foods or foods with as few ingredients as possible.
- Buying produce in a variety of colors.
- Buying whole grains.
- Buying food where all of the ingredients are pronounceable and recognizable.
- Buying our meat and dairy free of antibiotics and hormones.
- Buying organic products and produce when we can.
- Eating Meatless Monday meals one to two times a week.
Think there is no way to do this and still save money? Check out my Staples List. This is where you can really save some money. These are the items you can find coupons for almost every month. Then, when they go on sale, use your coupons and stock up! You can use these items to whip up quick healthy recipes that cost very little money. In fact, I regularly post quick healthy recipes that use mainly ingredients from my staples list. Creating a meal with a .19 can of tomatoes and a .37 can of beans plus a few more low cost ingredients means having plenty of money left to buy whole foods each week.

Where do you typically buy your meat and poultry? My family rarely eats red meat, but we do consume chicken and turkey. I am growing concerned about the ways the poultry is handled on farms, and the junk used to make the animals bigger and output eggs daily. I have heard about CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) and buying from local famers, but have not purchased from these yet.
Hi Beth, A lot of the organic poultry I get is from Safeway. I only buy it when it goes in the clearance bin for 30% off. Then I come straight home and cook it prior to refreezing. I also look for sales at our Natural Grocers on Organic Prairie ground turkey. I stocked up when Whole Foods has its one day sales. They have put beef, tilapia, and shrimp at great prices in the last few months. Last year they put turkey on sale for .88/lb about this time of year. I really hope they offer that sale again! King Soopers will have pretty decent sales on Laura’s Lean Beef. If you have a place that sells Laura’s, head over to Laura’s website and if you sign up for their newsletter, you can print a $1 off coupon. Walmart actually has the best price on organic eggs without a coupon anywhere in my town. So, I guess, to sum it up, I follow the sale!
I read your post on cooking pinto beans in the crockpot. I will definitely try that but how do you make your Burrito Bowls? Recipe, please?
Hi Donna, I will get a recipe up for how I make my Burrito Bowls. It’s basically just rice, beans, shredded lettuce, pico de gallo, cheese and either guacamole or sour cream if you like them. Andrea
