I get asked all the time, “How do you eat healthy and still use coupons? The only coupons I see are for junk. “
First, I always follow my Green Diet, which means I spend about $20 every week on fresh produce. I also always buy organic milk and eggs. That’s about another $10 per week right there. So $30 each week is already spent on whole foods.
So where are the savings? On my Staples List. These are the items that you can go to again and again to make healthy, delicious meals for your family. AND, there are coupons for them, AND they do go on sale. Check it out:
That’s right. All of those foods are on my Staples List! And I only paid $21.90 for them! Here’s everything that’s pictured:
15 pkgs whole grain pasta (.20 each)
6 lbs organic potatoes ($3.59)
3 lbs onions ($1)
2 pkgs frozen vegetables (.79 ea)
15 cans of low sodium beans (.37 ea)
8 cans refried beans (.54 ea)
8 cans tomatoes (.19 ea)
9 cans Ro-tel tomatoes (.15 ea)
2 pkgs brown rice (FREE)
1 pkg lasagna noodles (FREE)
And I’m so excited because starting next week I will show you how I make nutritious meals using my Staples List ingredients. Be sure to come back Monday to get more details! I also will help you get started with your own staples list, so you have a pantry you can rely on!
This isn’t everything I bought this week. Here is how I did:
I shopped the commissary and King Soopers. I spent a total of $91.22
Commissary Spent: $53.33
Saved: $45.30 or 48%
King Soopers Spent: $37.89
Saved: $54.30 or 58%

Where are you getting organic potatoes? I’m lucky if I can find a bag half that size at that price most of the time. When Trader Joe has them, it still is 3.29 for 4 lbs, which is about the cheapest I’ve found.
I used to have all those canned staples but then I read Consumer Reports and several other places about toxic metals leeching into the food in cans and I was worried it would aggrevate my autoimmune condition. So now it is glass, frozen or uncooked (beans).
That is awesome!!! Where did you get the Honest Kids drinks from and did you have a coupon? I applaud you for sticking with the organics and good for you items!! A lot of times it’s hard to do on a tight budget!
Mindy, I would love to have a Trader Joes! I’m surprised about the potato prices. It is amazing how they vary around the country. The organic potatoes were on special at our King Soopers. Buy One Get One.
I do know about the cans – yet even the organic beans come in cans! The very best thing to do is to cook your own. However, I will admit I have NEVER been able to get them to turn out to my liking. So I try to make other improvements. I try to store everything in glass and only reheat in glass. It sounds like you are doing everything right for your health! I’m interested to know, what items do you save on using coupons?
Hi Rebecca, The honest kid drinks were purchased at the commissary. I used the .75 off printable coupon found at honest tea’s website. You are allowed to print 3. I’ve printed this coupon several times. I think they might let you print them every month? I’m not sure exactly what their print limits are or when they reset.
Thanks for visiting! I appreciate the comment!
Such great deals! Can’t believe you got all that for $21!
